Mike, very interesting stuff indeed. Does the rise in cancer correspond to the rise in omega-6 laden vegetable oils?

Anna, very true. Cancer isn't some rogue virus...it's you (and me!). Interesting factoid on Doug Green....I love those people that wear Hawaiian shirts everywhere...always gives me a chuckle. :)

Cheers

Got a chuckle reading this post. I know Doug Green (here's a factoid - he always wears Hawaiian shirts). He's a colleague of my husband's and used to be in San Diego before heading to Memphis.

This is a terrific post. Most people don't understand that we probably all have some cancer cells in us at any given time, but our body has defenses to stop them before they get out of hand (usually).

Found these to be interesting:

"One characteristic that sets cancer cells apart from normal cells is softness, or elasticity of the cell."
http://www.hoinews.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=112423

"Cell membrane fatty acid analysis showed a considerable increase in the content of arachidonic acid (20:4, n-6) in the tumours (mean (SEM) 11.7 (1.5)%) compared with colonic mucosa (4.2 (0.4)%; p less than 0.05). Dietary fatty acid composition was also found to influence the profile of fatty acids in the colonic mucosa."
http://gut.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/32/4/413

So..excessive AA/Omega6 Polyunsaturated diets can make the cell membrane softer and more easily destroyed by cancer causing agents. That was the take home message I got...and I believe it. Throw out the margarine...it might give you cancer!
