Digest - Eat Your Cabbage and Omega-3s, Avoid the Fake Crab, Ditch the Energy Drinks, and Try Some Anise

Well blow me down! The more vegetables you eat, the better! What a novel idea! When It Comes To Red Cabbage, More Is Better - “ARS scientists have identified 36 anthocyanins in red cabbage, including eight that had never before been detected in the cabbage. …Emerging evidence suggests that anthocyanins may provide cancer protection, improve brain function and promote heart health. An earlier ARS study showed that some anthocyanins yield twice the antioxidant power of the same amount of vitamin C in test tubes, though the amount absorbed by the human body was not explored.”
Wait! You mean that stuff at the Chinese buffet isn’t real crab? Mystery Meat: Imitation Crab - “manufacturers skin and de-bone the fish, mince it and then leach it of water to create a thick paste known as surimi. But we all know a fish paste isn’t going to cut it, so manufacturers add some combination of starch – usually wheat or tapioca – to stiffen up the mixture, sugars to preserve the surimi for storage and freezing, and egg whites to again stabilize the mixture and add gloss and shine. Vegetable oil can also be added to improve the texture of the mix.” That’s not the end of the horror either. Check the link to see more.
Vegetarians take note: they’re talking about animal-based EPA and DHA, not the plant-based ALA. Cardiovascular Benefits Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reviewed - “‘These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19 percent to 45 percent. Overall, these findings suggest that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease.’”
Remember our discussion of energy drinks? Turns out they’ll rot your teeth too. Popular Energy Drinks Cause Tooth Erosion, Study Shows - “The study examined the acidity levels of five popular beverages on the market. The results proved that popular ‘high energy’ and sports drinks had the highest mean buffering capacity, resulting in the strongest potential for erosion of enamel.”
Like licorice? You’re in luck: Herb Anise Contains Unique Healthful Phenylpropanoids, Study Suggests - “A few showed some effectiveness against Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes malaria in humans, and Mycobacterium intracellulare, a bacterium which can cause illness in immunocompromised patients. Some phenylpropanoids exhibited anti-inflammatory activities. Pimpinella essential oils also showed estrogenic effects in a yeast model and were considered to have phytoestrogen properties. These results suggest that Pimpinella essential oils may be a source of potent compounds that could be used in developing powerful new pharmaceuticals and agrochemical agents.” What?!? Just eat the dang herbs! And Twizzlers don’t count…they don’t even have any anise in them.

Scott,
I was always curious why Art Devany ate the crab stuff. I used to eat it too.
I’ve looked everywhere for a product without all the “crap”. No luck.

Marc, I’m not sure if he was eating fake crab or real. It’s been so long since I’ve seen one of those posts that I can’t remember. If it was fake, I would bet he doesn’t know it’s that bad.
Sarena, you can bank on it having some beneficial properties. Every herb I looked at in my article on Herbs and Spices had loads of beneficial properties. Imagine that…people have been cooking with delicious, nutritious herbs for millenia!
Cheers

Sure, Scott! I just looked it up and found that it would be good for upping my breast milk supply!! Too bad the baby will be 17 next month!! Oh and that may explain the night sweats too…although I thought it was perimenopausal!! But the real reason I am using it is for the lowered blood glucose. Despite everything, it is still not as low as would like it to be!!

I have heard that raw cabbage and other raw vegetables in the cabbage family, such as broccoli, have goitergens – substances that suppress the thyroid. Have you heard about this?
