Hey Scott,
I typically don't take anything on the slopes with me now that I do Intermittent Fasting. I just get up, get dressed, and go ski until sometime in the afternoon. Then I head back to the condo and have some jerky, nuts, and a beer or two before going out and having a big dinner.

In past years, I have taken food out on the slopes with me though. As you've already mentioned, nuts is a good fairly dense fat option. Beef jerky is a nice option as well...it's lightweight and compact. But if you have jerky, you can make the original energy bar, pemmican. I talked a bit about it in this comment. Basically you make (or buy) jerky and shred it, render fat, and mix it all together into bars. It's full of fat and protein and you can add dried fruits, honey, coconut oil, nuts, or whatever else you want for flavor.

I've never made them, but Scotty Hagnas has a recipe for Paleo dark chocolate balls made with lots of coconut oil. It's in Issue 23 of the Performance Menu if you have a subscription.

I'm not sure what else would work though that's lightweight. Pemmican of some sort is likely the best option.

Hope that helps

Scott, wondering what kinds of snack or energy foods you pack on an outing like this. I take scouts out regularly in all kinds of weather and am always looking for good ideas on low carb / high fat food for me to take along for myself. Winter can be a lot easier (food-wise) than summer since everything will keep well. I'll be climbing and mountain biking in Moab, Utah next July with my scouts and any ideas beyond the standard nuts is welcome. Thanks.

Great times were had as always. The slopes weren't in great shape and there was a bit of rain Friday, but a weekend out of town with friends is always enjoyable regardless of ski conditions.

Adam,
Nice site...I do ski, though far from as well as you. Unfortunately, I only get out on the slopes once or twice a year. I'd love to ski more, but Louisville, KY isn't known for its mountains.

Cheers

Hi there,

I'm an avid follower of your blog. Thank you for the ever insightful delving into the truth about food.

But I didn't know that you skied. I am a ski pro from Canada as well as a trainer. I recently started a blog to share my entire philosophy of skiing from the gym to the slopes. Hope you don't mind if I share the address... http://skiflow.blogspot.com/

Hope your turns were sweet!

Cheers,
Adam

Hope you're "having" a blast then. I'll be flying to Steamboat on Tuesday for skiing. Can't wait.
