Again great article Scott!

It made me think about when I started getting interested in nutrition/health.
When I was 22 or so, I read this little book caled "The sugar blues"
No-one ever tol me that eating 5 kit-kats in a day wasn't good for you. ;-)
Can't believe that about the Panerra dressing, but not surprising at all.

A spoonful of sugar? No of course that would be barbaric.

But I do recall mom making sugar sandwiches from wholesome white bread, generous dolops or margarine (even healthier!) and sprinkled with sugar. Sweet AND crunchy! Yum!

Plus they tasted much nicer than the "chip butties" which was essentially the same thing swapping out sugar for french fries.

It's only now years later that I see the irony in that name. Chip Butties.

I ate at Panera Bread once and figured that the balsamic vinaigrette would be a good option. I mean, they market themselves as healthful, right? I noticed that it seemed a bit sweet, but didn't think that much of it....until I couldn't stay awake an hour later. I went to the website and found out that a serving of their dressing is like 25g of sugar. It's ridiculous...whatever happened to just oil and vinegar (which Panera doesn't carry by the way).

Now at restaurants, I always get just oil and vinegar.

Cheers

When I order salads in restaraunts, I always ask for the olive oil and lemon on the side. Otherwise, I too feel like I am getting a sugar sauce, dressing. I was in a local supermarket lately, and saw a sign in the meat case that said : We now sell sugar free chopped liver. That made me think they probably use equal or some crap in it! WHY??

Great article.

I remember ranting about this back in the 70s. I was going to college at the University of Minnesota, and their food science came up with the idea of adding extra sugar to turkey to get more people to eat more turkey.

And oddly enough, that coincided with the desires of the large numbers of turkey growers in the midwest, who wanted to sell more turkey (for a profit). No one gave a darn whether that was a good idea health-wise or not.

Of course, the U. of M is where Ancel Keys was, and he didn't care about carbs, just fat.

So lots of sugar in turkey (to start), now lots of sugar in everything.

The other day I was at a restaurant, and ordered a salad. I had eaten there before, and the dressings I had were too sweet. The waitress said she had a balsamic vinegar dressing, I thought, great, that shouldn't be sweet.

When I got the salad, I took a bite, and the dressing was like syrup! Next time, oil and vinegar only...but it's almost impossible to not get sugar these days.
