Relax Buddy…The Stress Is Bad For Your Heart
Here’s an article that came out yesterday: Cardiovascular Events during World Cup Soccer.
Viewing a stressful soccer match more than doubles the risk of an acute cardiovascular event. In view of this excess risk, particularly in men with known coronary heart disease, preventive measures are urgently needed.
While this study was on soccer fans, who tend to be a breed unto themselves, what with riots and all, I have no doubts that this carries over to fans of NCAA, NBA, and NFL teams. We all know that person that gets just a little too caught up in the action of their favorite team. That’s the person that will let a loss by the local team ruin their day or, worse, their week. If you’re that guy, calm down; it’s hard on the body. Stressors like this are just all around hard on the body. It’s really not worth getting all worked up considering that you most likely don’t know the players, will never know the players, and the players could really care less if they did know you.

It is funny (and I posted something about this myself yesterday, developing the the stress/heart disease link http://conditioningresearch.blogspot.com/2008/01/watching-football-can-break-your-heart.html ) - I know that the stress is bad for you, but…….somehow there is another side to it. I went to a rugby match a couple of weeks ago and my local team - Edinburgh Gunners - were the underdogs and beat the english champions Leicester in a really exciting match. It was a great spectacle and were were cheering and shouting all the way through…..there was stress but also a real emotional release too and after the match I felt really elated and energised…..

This really isn’t new. Many years ago I worked in CCU (Cardiac Care Unit) and we always expected increased admits with any major sporting event, snowstorm, etc. Physical or emotional stress, good OR bad, leads to elevated BP and the potential for heart related problems. Asthma can also flare during these times too!
