This really isn't new. Many years ago I worked in CCU (Cardiac Care Unit) and we always expected increased admits with any major sporting event, snowstorm, etc. Physical or emotional stress, good OR bad, leads to elevated BP and the potential for heart related problems. Asthma can also flare during these times too!

It is funny (and I posted something about this myself yesterday, developing the the stress/heart disease link http://conditioningresearch.blogspot.com/2008/01/watching-football-can-break-your-heart.html ) - I know that the stress is bad for you, but.......somehow there is another side to it. I went to a rugby match a couple of weeks ago and my local team - Edinburgh Gunners - were the underdogs and beat the english champions Leicester in a really exciting match. It was a great spectacle and were were cheering and shouting all the way through.....there was stress but also a real emotional release too and after the match I felt really elated and energised.....
