New Year’s Ruminations
Here we are, facing down another new year, 2008. I’m excited by the possibilities of the coming year. I’ve never been a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions. The thought that I should wait until some arbitrary date to decide to make changes always escaped me. When I decide to make a change in my life, I typically decide to implement it today, not tomorrow. That said, some people benefit from the fresh slate that is set before them every January. The holidays are over as of tonight at midnight. Tomorrow is a good time to start working on the new you, whether that means losing weight, rebuilding relationships, getting the promotion you want, or some other goal.New Year’s strikes me as a good time to set real goals, measurable goals. Perhaps for you it’s a good time to try your hand at creating your “101 Things in 1001 Days”. A year isn’t very long and could serve to restrain the resolutions or goals that you pick. One thousand and one days is about 2.75 years, plenty long to set some long-term goals that may not be doable in a year. Since setting my goals in September, I’ve ticked 8 of them off and have lots of others in process. Some won’t be done until the calendar hits June 2nd, 2010 (my 1001st day) as they are on-going things like following a monthly budget. I can’t really know if I’ve done that until the time is up.
Regardless of whether you’re a resolution setter or decide to try finding 101 things (or 38 things or 79 things) you want to do, take some time to think over the things you’re happy with from the year we’re leaving and things that you’d like to work on. We all have goals, or at least we all should have goals. I can’t imagine living life without striving to improve. There may be big steps and major changes involved in reaching some of your goals. Now is the time to decide what you will and won’t give up to get what you want out of life.
Thanksgiving isn’t the only time to think about what we’re thankful for…now is a good time as well. So with that, I want to thank you, my readers. I have a feeling that I get more out of this site than anyone does in terms of enjoyment and education. Having a forum in which to express myself and put my ideas on “paper” is a great stress-reliever for me.
And most importantly, have a wonderful New Year. We’ll meet here again in ‘08 to further explore health, nutrition, and our personal journeys.
