A Fine Example of Sports Fan Idiocy
Check out this column from my local paper. Let me set the stage for you. West Virginia’s kicker missed two field goals in a loss to Pittsburgh that cost his team a chance to play for the national championship. So what did some of the fans do?
The damage vandals did to his car. To his home. The threatening voice mails and e-mails. The text messages. The clusters of fans outside his house chanting insults. The things people were saying to his girlfriend.
….
But when McAfee’s father, Tim, heard about some of the venom spewed at his son on his Facebook.com profile, it burned him up. And when he saw that someone had posted “McAfee must die” and other messages telling his son that they wished he was dead, that was it.
That’s right folks…death threats. For missing two field goals. In a football game. For those wondering at home, football is JUST A SPORT! This is a prime example of “taking things that don’t affect you and that you have no effect on” too seriously. And most of the people acting like morons are probably too out of shape to actually jump over the wall separating the players from the fans and get on the field.
Don’t define yourself by how a team you cheer for plays. Don’t take sports too seriously. Just don’t be that guy.

…or gal.
Sports idiots come in both genders these days, though I agree that men have it worse.
