Eat Onions, Save Your Pancreas
Here’s good news for onion lovers like myself: An Onion a Day May Repel Pancreatic Cancer
Onions and black tea appeared to show “modest inverse associations” with pancreatic cancer, although the trends were not significant (P=0.056 and P=0.07, respectively), the researchers said.
Apples and green, herbal, or other teas, on the other hand, showed no such associations.
….
“The effect was largest in smokers, presumably because they are at increased pancreatic cancer risk already,” Dr. Nöthlings said at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting in April, where some of the data was presented.Smoking is the only established risk factor for pancreatic cancer, Dr. Nöthlings said.
So eat your onions. And don’t stop eating your apples or drinking green tea. Pancreatic cancer is a pretty rare disease and those foods have other beneficial properties. Of course, if you’re eating a diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables, you probably don’t need to worry about the health properties of each individual item. Nevertheless, it’s always interesting to see the specific ways in which compounds in certain foods help.
