Louisville-area Meat Buying Club
I’m always talking about the benefits of grass-fed meats and pastured poultry. Well here’s a chance for us to start a buying club for Pike Valley Farm here in Louisville. They raise their meats in the same way that Joel Salatin, who was featured in The Omnivore’s Dilemma, does.
Here’s how it works: Every 6-8 weeks, we email our orders to Pike Valley, who will then deliver them to one location in Louisville. On delivery day (the next day is I think Nov 7th), everyone shows up with checks in hand, picks up their meat and goes on about their merry way. Look at the two documents linked below to see the available products and prices. The Individual Product List is what will be used for the buying club. You can also order a half/whole cow or pig from them (see Bulk Beef and Pork), but you have to go pick it up at the butcher yourself. So the goal is to get a large enough order amongst a group that it is worthwhile for Pike Valley to deliver to Louisville every couple months. You may only get a few steaks and pay $50, but with enough of us, the total order could be $1000 and beyond.
This is a really good way to get grass-fed meat, poultry, and eggs at competitive prices. Their eggs are actually cheaper than the eggs I get at the farmer’s market, which are cheaper than the omega-3 eggs available at the grocery store.
