Hey Katarina and Anna,
Thanks for stopping by! I too noticed the fast food culture creeping into the lives of those families in the What the World Eats photos. Lots of potato chips and frozen junk foods, although nowhere near as bad as the families from the US (especially that North Carolina family). Unfortunately, the Western world is encroaching on every traditional culture, changing their food customs to mimic ours. McDonald's can now be found in nearly every corner of the globe, and I don't think the world is the better for it. But it is the way of the world to aspire to afford the expensive convenience food only to later realize the errors of our ways and wish to return to more traditional ways of eating. There are a few holdouts left though....some countries don't yet have a McDonald's, though probably because it hasn't been deemed to be profitable.

Cheers!
Scott

Scott wrote: Health will never come in a package that has to tell you that it's healthful.

I love that line!!!

And I agree with your first commenter, that things are worsening in Europe, too. As much as I like some of the things that have come about as a result of th eEU (common currency, easier to travel, etc.) I think European food is suffering.

Hi Scott

I´ve been enjoying reading your blog lately and agree with your approach to nutrition and healthy lifestyle which is roughly as mine. Speaking of European cuisine, however, I live in Portugal and portuguese cuisine does exist, but here also exists the problem of obesity and poor health derived from poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyle, and I would like to stress that it is on rise. Unfortunately, even Europeans are forgetting their original ways of preparing meals and falling into American-like foods and even here, as I said, the folks are obsessed with fast and cheap carbs such as pastry, white rice and white-flour bread, pizzas, McDons and Co. The funniest thing I saw in your blog, when you posted What the World Eats series of photos was the one where a family from Sicilly was pictured with the fare they usually eat in a week´s time, and the remark below that one of their favourite was frozen fish sticks, such as Iglos. On an island well-known for its traditional fishing. Sad, but true.
Thanks for your efforts posting once again.
Katarina
