Pet Food Yet Again
Y’know, all of this pet food recall news has me thinking about how glad I am that I feed my dog a natural diet of raw meat and produce. I don’t have to worry myself with contaminated wheat gluten and, now, rice protein. This whole fiasco just reinforces that I’m doing the right thing for my dog, just as we do for ourselves, in providing natural foods that are matched to her genetic makeup.

Scott - cute dog!! I have similar thoughts when crazy stuff hits the news about processed foods, and am incredibly glad I eat mainly meat, fish, eggs and the occasional veggie or some nuts. I’m sure by focusing both our diets and our pets’ on the basics that we were designed to eat we’re saving ourselves and our furry friends from a lot of damage in the long run.

Do you know of any good websites about homemade dog food diets. I only know raw cat food sites and recipes, but I have a friend who is interested in making her two dogs’ food and she is looking for some good advice.

Hey Kate, thanks! We love her…even when she goes outside, tramps through the mud, and comes back in.
Anna,
I did a lot of research before deciding to raw feed my dog, as I didn’t want to hurt her. Here are some links that I still have:

Some general reading
I don’t do all the supplements that are listed on the 4th link. She does get fish or cod liver oil, 3-4 tbsp per 2 weeks of food, and some coconut oil (same amount as fish oil). I sometimes grind up flax seeds and dump them on top of everything. I also give her a puppy multi-vitamin with both daily feedings. I have 30 containers that I fill up, so that’s 15 days worth of food from about an hour or so of work.
She’s currently 40lbs and as a growing puppy, I try to keep her on the upper end of 1-2% of bodyweight per day. I count approximately how many chicken backs are in the 40lb box, then just do some rough math to estimate the weight of each one. As of now, she gets about 2/3 of a back per meal (so hopefully your friend isn’t squeamish about cutting bones) and if it’s under or over, I don’t worry as it will average out over time. Then about 3 spoon fulls of chopped/pureed vegetables (whatever is in the fridge: carrots, cucumbers, celery, lettuces, radishes, sweet potatoes, etc), eggs, and oils with lots of spices thrown in to get some extra nutrients (cumin, paprika, curry powder, cinnamon, etc).
Note: Don’t use garlic. I made that mistake for about 10 days and she developed a funky cough. If the dogs are still small, chicken necks may be better as they are smaller and easier for a small dog/pup to chew.
Let me know if she has any other questions. I’m just learning myself and am far from an expert, but I’ll be glad to help wherever I can.
